As the delta variant continues to increase, COVID-19 continues to spread among the population. To date, 43,086,000 cases of the virus have been reported nationwide – and that number is growing every day.
In the Tampa-St. In the Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area, located in Florida, a total of 470,803 cases of COVID-19 have been reported to date. Adjusted for population, there were 15,538 reported infections per 100,000 people in the region – above the national rate of 13,169 cases per 100,000 people.
The above average COVID-19 infection rate per capita in Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater is driven by a high concentration of the virus in one particular area.
The larger Tampa metropolitan area includes four counties or county equivalents, which may include independent cities – and among them, Hillsborough County has the most COVID-19 cases per capita. So far, there have been a total of 234,084 infections in Hillsborough County, or 16,976 per 100,000 people.
However, a relatively high infection rate does not necessarily mean that per capita deaths from COVID-19 are higher in Hillsborough County than in the entire Tampa area. There have been a total of 190 coronavirus deaths per 100,000 people in Hillsborough County, compared to 238 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 across Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area.
