It’s unclear if Nebraska plans to take two quarterbacks from the transfer portal for 2022, but that appears to be the direction things are going.
Sports360AZ.com reported Monday night that Florida State transfer portal quarterback Chubba Purdy will visit the NU on January 14, which is the first weekend the NCAA recruiting deadlock ends. The second semester of classes in Nebraska begins January 14.
Purdy is a four-man quarterback who has been on the portal since November. He was originally recruited by Husker’s new offensive coordinator Mark Whipple when he was in Pittsburgh.
While at Florida State, Purdy was Mike Norvell’s handpicked quarterback in the Class of 2020 as they have now ditched Georgia Tech appellant Jeff Sims in his favor. Prior to joining Norvell at FSU, he was originally a recruit from Louisville.
Purdy suffered a collarbone injury in 2020 during fall camp at Florida State, but still returned to the field that year and saw 102 snapshots of action completing 27 of 53 passes for 219 yards, two touchdowns. and an interception. He also carried the ball five times for 78 yards.
In 2021, Purdy saw 17 shots against UMass and appeared to be able to see the weather later in the season before entering the portal.
What we don’t know is how things are going to go with a more veteran quarterback in the transfer portal.
It seemed like the plan from the start to replace the late Adrian Martinez with another seasoned flagman to work with Scott Frost and Whipple in 2022, allowing NU’s young quarterbacks more time to learn and develop.
Casey Thompson of Texas is one of a handful of names that have been publicly assumed to be interested in the Huskers.
